Summary

The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall。 It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain。

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death。 But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed。 She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead。

To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia。 But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily。 She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed。

This book was a real page-turner when it comes to the characters, the complexity and breaking of the stereotypical norms is what hooked me from the beginning and kept me going until the very end。 My only critique is with the plot, you think the story is going to go one way and then takes a left turn and ends up as an entirely new story; which isn't bad at all just had me wondering where this was going a few times。 Definitely looking forward to the next installment! I aspire to have as much fearlessness, motivation and confidence as the female lead! The world concept intriguing; gave me Pacific Rim meets Hunger Games vibes。 I did find that the language the author used did not match the setting and it threw me off (did not expect to see "Yo" or some swear words come up in an ancient, traditionalist China-like setting, for example)。 Her rage was definitely warranted but I can't help but feel that her attitude / storyline just flipped the oppression instead of I aspire to have as much fearlessness, motivation and confidence as the female lead! Not usually the genre I enjoy, but an excellent story and excellent writing!

A really fun story。 Using qi to power giant robots to defend humanity against aliens was cool。 Parents: The main character’s outrage at how she’s treated because she’s a girl and her crusade to redefine gender roles is not subtle。 She shouts “I define myself。 Everyone else is wrong。” And of course she defines herself and her relationships in anti-traditional ways。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 DNF。 I wanted to like this, but I had to stop by 40% when “oh shit, you really do love me” love interest #1 showed up via ex machina。 Painful, cringey dialogue。 No character development- you’re expected to just accept the furious monologues, wise worldview perspectives without realistic origins, and the strangest flip flops between effortless “badass-ness” and quivering sensitivity from the main character。 A jarring pace。

An interesting mashup of historical chinese culture, manga, and modern smash-the-patriarchy attitude。 I liked the fact that although it was the trope of the angry asian girl, it was from the perspective of that person。 Got a little messy at the end, every page seemed to contain yet another plot twist or even bigger power boost or whatever else; the written equivalent of a Michael Bay movie。 Most of the big reveal plot points were unsurprising。

What's astounding is that the author fits dismantling a patriarchy, have the craziest plot twist, good romance partner(s), and multiple origin stories all in one book。 I cannot wait until the second book this one is simply incredible and a must-read for all fantasy readers out there。 Also this book is extremely satisfying to say the least the way the MC disregards her family that didn't care about her which is nice to see some independent action in this element that is hardly talked about with MC's。 Another thing is that the world building in this book is top tier and the writing is truly beautiful but also gets right to the point。 I'm too excited to see what happens next with Zetian as the book ends with Two major cliffhangers (so sad)。 。。。more

Blazing fast story that’s immediately compelling and intense。 Couldn’t put it down, and was immediately intrigued by the sci-mythology merger。 My only complaint is that some of the reveals feel rushed, although that’s also a part of this book’s strength; huge, cataclysmic events happen suddenly and without warning and leave you reeling in the best way。

There will be no redemption。 It is not me who is wrong。 It's everyone else。"oh zetian。。。 what a queen (or should i say empress 👀) i absolutely love this new trend in YA literature of female characters who are just angry, vengeful and power-hungry。 and zetian was just that。 i like that she didn't settle after avenging her sister's death, and that she made it her mission to essentially just smash the patriarchy lol。 and i also just love that she genuinely was not a good person, and did some messed up things。 people who criticize this clearly don't know anything about her real-life inspo lol。the boys, yizhi and shimin, were also really enjoyable to read, but because we don't get to see their POV of the story, they felt more like side characters than protagonists at times。 i know we sort of get shimin's POV when zetian sees his memories, but i would've loved to see actual chapters from his perspective, especially bc i feel like it would've made his relationship with zetian and yizhi so much more meaningful。 The love triangle"Instead of betrayal of any form, it feels like a completion。 My killer boy, my sweet boy。 The final line in this triangular formation we've been dancing in, making us stronger than ever。 This is unconventional, yet another implicit rule we're breaking, but you know what? It works for us。 And I think the three of us are done with letting this world tell us what's okay and what isn't。"i will truly never be over this。 i absolutely adore how the boys were introduced as the standard tropey love interests you see in like every YA series ever lol。 yizhi, the soft best friend, and shimin, the 'bad' boy who is also a literal criminal。 and with the way the ships were developing you'd think zetian had a certain choice to make。。。but nah。 at first she just has two boyfriends, who are both really mature about it。 but then。。。 turns out her boyfriends also have a thing for each other。 and the rest is history。 🤠overall i settled on 4/4。5 stars for this book。 i was expecting to be blown away and give it 5 stars, and while i did really enjoy reading it, the one-person POV just didn't do it for me :/。 it was still an amazing book, with a unique world, a refreshing protagonist, some empowering commentary and obviously。。。 a love triangle done right 😏。 。。。more

I absolutely adore this book。 I hesitated starting it but I'm so glad I did。 I see a lot of the reviews saying it's not very feminist but also this is essentially old China set in a high tech world。 This IS what feminism for that time period would be。 Her being the sole person to break the stereotypes is realistic as most people didn't wanna rock the boat。 She understands why the other women in the story act the way they do, but she's rebelling against that。 She isn't afraid。NOW。 The polyam rela I absolutely adore this book。 I hesitated starting it but I'm so glad I did。 I see a lot of the reviews saying it's not very feminist but also this is essentially old China set in a high tech world。 This IS what feminism for that time period would be。 Her being the sole person to break the stereotypes is realistic as most people didn't wanna rock the boat。 She understands why the other women in the story act the way they do, but she's rebelling against that。 She isn't afraid。NOW。 The polyam relationship was amazing。 I love how it developed and it was beautiful。 I need more of this in books and I need more Iron Widow! 。。。more

I loved the concept behind the book however I felt the world-building was lacking。 The world felt as if it was built around events rather than the events happening within the world。 The ending plot twist, while it was a bit obvious, may have me reading book two。
